Our friend Gordos!

One of our local potter's homes - in the Luberon Valley, Provence

As I write, the cherry harvest is on....and delicious ones at that.

Menerbes, Luberon Valley, Provence

Peeping down from the mountain which divides Menerbes and Lumieres in the middle of the Luberon Valley this is what awaits you!

From another angle

This wonderful fella's name is Gordos.

Freshly tilled melon plants bordered by a splash of wild poppies - near Lumieres in the Luberon Valley of Provence

The veritable doyen of Public Relations in Australasia, raconteur and sage, Chris Savage philosophises from behind a cloud of blue (ish) cigar smoke that “every man deserves a good pork chop from time to time”.

So it has been a quest in Provence. With the benchmark – and a formidable one at that – of the organic pork chop at Donovans in St Kilda, Melbourne, Australia, the quiet hunt has been for a largish pork chop, full of flavour, succulent and adequately replete with all the trimmings – a few roast potatoes, a little veggies or salad and a slap of apple sauce. Cut into the meat near to the bone and it should have just turned from pink to a little brown and ooze a few juices. Eat slowly, chew well, feel it slip down, sit back, sip a glass of something and enjoy the after-flavour (always the best!).

The Holy Grail has been found. Drive up the road to Gordes in the Luberon Valley of Provence and you will pass through the hamlet of les Imberts. L’Estellan is a bit of an institution next to the main road – we had not been before but Vicky invited us and we refused to say no! On the menu……a pork chop.

The chop! This time the trimmings are some mushroom sauce.

Madame had a seafood melange on risotto to kick off and then a great fish dish – a family of the tuna. We were so ecited by the pork chop that we forgot to take more pics. Vicky had the chop!

L’Estellan is open for lunch and dinners every day from April to October and six days a week in the off-season.

Bastide les Amis, Luberon, Provence

From the end of May and into June, there are many fields of poppies which spring up all over Provence. The Luberon Valley is one place where you can really feast your eyes. 2012 will go down as a ‘great’ year. Here’s our final wrap of the annual spectacle. Who needs captions with these?
