A great Western Cape tradition is plankieskos – literally food on a plank.Originating from the old Voortrekkers who used to encamp from their ox wagons and make up snacks/meals of dried meats and cheeses, all served on a utilitarian piece of wood to sustain them on their long travels.

Now, the ‘plank’ has become posher – often the end of wine barrel or a branded, oiled and treated board.

Visiting some friends in Green Point, we had a great plankie!

Ingredients a la Ooikatte (above) – Eland salami, home made anchoiade, Knorhoek smoked chicken, Krom River cheese, home made fruit bread. Delicious!
