Special Places to Eat: France

Our Luberon Top 10:

Any list like this is highly subjective and can be trumped many times over. However, these are places that we have enjoyed and come back to time and again.

We like to live the French way. This means that we have our main meal at lunch time and snack in the evening – almost always at home. The restaurant choices are made in this context. We try to avoid the Michelin stars, too much ‘white plate’, starched tablecloths and attitude to match, and excessively expensive establishments.

Here goes:

To eat………

1.La Verandah, Menerbes

Casual for lunch, stylish and creative for dinner. The Verandah never disappoints and along with professional and friendly service, great food and clever menu, the value for money is exceptional. The firm favourite!

2.Maison Gouin, Coustellet

A deli and superior butchery by day and a restaurant for lunch and dinner. With a superb wine cellar, Gouin is always packed with locals – the surest sign of quality and value.

3.La Closerie, Ansouis

Catch this restaurant before it is decorated with Michelin stars and it becomes out of reach. The lunch plat du jour is a must-have in wonderful surrounds.

Something really different! Situated in an old school, the husband and wife team are hands on with real, Provençal fare. Inexpensive but very tasty.

After ten years in Roussillon, this husband and wife team have set up in an unremarkable old house on the main road to Cavaillon. There is a simple luncheon menu with a move upmarket at dinner. Great value and superb food, stylishly presented. You can also pre-order a dinner and collect.
